Neighboorhood meeting for Riverfront Drive construction project this afternoon

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - A major update to Riverfront Drive in Mankato is on its way and tonight, impacted residents and business owners have a chance to learn more. Mankato city staff will be on hand at a “neighborhood meeting” Thursday at 1:30. Anybody residing or conducting business between Third Avenue and Main Street on Riverfront Drive is invited to attend. Engineers aim to have a discussion around the timeline of the project, which does not have an anticipated start date yet.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - A World War II veteran from Stillwater, Minnesota has been accounted for, decades after his death during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The United States Defense P.O.W/M.I.A Accounting Agency, or D.P.A.A, says Navy Fire Controlman 3rd class William F. Gusie was one of 429 crewmen killed on the U.S.S Oklahoma on December 7, 1941. Gusie was 19 years old at the time of his death and had been declared “non-recoverable” in 1949 as recovery efforts continued years after the attack.
Minnesota adds 1,000 jobs in March

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - March was a month of job growth for the state of Minnesota. According to data released this morning from the Department of Employment and Economic Development, 11,000 jobs were gained with 3,000 workers joining the labor force last month. The Mankato Metropolitan Statistical Area saw modest gains in March, with a 0.3% job growth from February. In the last year, the Mankato MSA has grown in all industry sectors, with the highest gain in government jobs at a 1.7% increase.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - An investigation is underway after a man is shot multiple times in Mankato Monday night. Mankato Public Safety says officers responded to several 911 calls regarding sounds of gunshots the 1400 block of Eastport Drive. Authorities arrived to find a man with gunshot wounds which don’t appear to be life-threatening according to Public Safety.He was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System - Mankato for treatment. Investigators say they believe this is an isolated incident.

ST. PETER, Minn. (KEYC) - A state lawmaker out of St. Peter is joining a White House conversation this afternoon following a major announcement from the Biden administration this morning. President Biden announced the first-ever national drinking water standard for PFAS, protecting 100 million people from PFAS exposure. DFL Rep. Jeff Brand of Minnesota House District 18A has spearheaded similar efforts on the state level. He will join White House staff on a virtual call at this afternoon.

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Mankato could be getting a full-size Chick-Fil-A location in the near future. An application submitted to the City of Mankato shows the chain’s plans to set up shop near the River Hills Mall. If approved, Chick-Fil-A would occupy the former Party City location on Adams St.The developer’s proposal would involve tearing down the current building to construct a dual-drive thru restaurant with dine-in seating and pick-up lanes as well.
Spring Round Dance will be a first for Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - Everyone’s invited to the first Round Dance to be held in Mankato later this month. It’s a celebratory gathering held in many Indigenous communities nationwide to promote the traditions of all cultures. The event, taking place on April 13, will feature singers and drummers from across the country as well as indigenous vendors and food trucks. This is the first Round Dance in Mankato since the city’s founding in 1852.
BENCHS makes animal intake policy change

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The Blue Earth-Nicollet County Humane Society is making policy changes related to animal intakes. Tuesday morning, BENCHS announced it would no longer be accepting stray animals directly from the public. In making the changes, the shelter cites capacity limitations due to not having an in-house veterinarian. BENCHS says to compensate for the lack of in-house resources, it will prioritize care for surrendered family pets.
