DETROIT LAKES — In what one longtime board member called an “internal coup,” a bare majority of the Pelican River Watershed Board last month unexpectedly voted to essentially gut a big chunk of the district’s regulatory authority and turn it over to zoning offices in Becker County and Detroit Lakes. On the majority side were Board Vice President Laurie Olson, secretary Chris Jasken, treasurer Charles Jasken and manager Scott Busker.

DETROIT LAKES — The Detroit Lakes municipal liquor store, Lakes Liquor, had an outstanding financial year in 2023, according to the most recent audit from the Minnesota Auditor’s Office. Detroit Lakes (population 10,003) had profits of about $1.4 million from its off-sale store — a 15% profit margin — and transferred $3.4 million out of its liquor fund. The Lake Park city liquor operation also had a good year, bringing about $81,000 into city coffers.

DETROIT LAKES — A Minnesota Appeals Court is asking Becker County District Judge Gretchen Thilmony to take another look at her decision not to release the police body camera footage in the Sen. Nicole Mitchell case. Thilmony had ruled against the footage request — made the day after Mitchell’s arrest in Detroit Lakes — by conservative news outlet Alpha News . Mitchell grew up in Detroit Lakes and now serves as a DFL senator from Woodbury, Minnesota.
