Almost £140m of taxpayers’ money should not be spent reopening a “failed” airport during a climate emergency, the leader of the Green Party in Sheffield has claimed. Councillor Douglas Johnson criticised Doncaster Council’s plan to lease Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) from The Peel Group and find a new operator to run it by March. It comes as South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) is set to approve the council’s outline business case this week and offer £138m for the rescue plan.

A West Yorkshire Police officer who assaulted colleagues after they were called to his home to deal with an allegation of domestic abuse could be sacked. PC Daniel McKie has been charged with gross misconduct and will face a disciplinary hearing, which begins on February 20. According to the force, officers were called to his home in December 2022 as he was accused of being abusive towards his partner after their relationship broke down.

A former West Yorkshire Police officer who crashed while she was drink-driving with a three-year-old child in the car has been found guilty of gross misconduct. Abigail Pigram was told she would have been dismissed by the force if she had not resigned at an earlier date, following a disciplinary hearing. The off-duty PC crashed her car in Vale Mill Lane, Keighley after attending a birthday party with the child in August 2022. The car slid down an embankment and collided with a fence.

A bus driver who killed a woman in North Yorkshire has been told his prison sentence could be increased. Jonathan Eaves, 25, was jailed for four years and eight months at York Crown Court last month after he caused the crash which claimed the life of 27-year-old Saskia Bets. The Attorney General is considering whether judges should review the sentence, after it was referred under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme by a member of the public.

Rail Minister Huw Merriman has insisted the upcoming increase in rail ticket prices for passengers across the country is “fair”. The government has announced regulated rail fares, which make up almost half of all fares, will increase by 4.9 per cent on March 3. The fares usually rise in line with the level of retail price index (RPI) inflation from the previous July (9 per cent), but the government said it did not want to “overburden passengers” during a cost-of-living crisis.
