CHEROKEE, Iowa -- A Cherokee man charged with murder for allegedly running over another man with a pickup truck has bonded out of jail. Richard Hammond, 66, posted a $100,000 surety bond Tuesday and was released from the Cherokee County Jail. Hammond was arrested Monday on a charge of first-degree murder. He's charged with running over Christopher Wheeler, 47, of Sutherland, Iowa, early Monday at a rural Cherokee acreage.

Runoff into the upper Missouri River basin continues to be below average, and the forecast for runoff in 2025 continues to drop as well. Runoff into the Missouri River above Sioux City was 2.3 million acre-feet in March, 76% of average. "Runoff into the reservoir system was below average for the month of March, and conditions across most of the basin remain dry," John Remus, chief of the Corps of Engineers' Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, said in a news release Wednesday.

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- An Inwood, Iowa, child care provider has pleaded not guilty to more than a dozen counts of child endangerment for alleged abusive behavior. Elizabeth Kainrath, 30, entered her written plea Monday in Lyon County District Court to 13 counts of misdemeanor child endangerment and one count of felony child endangerment -- substantial risk causing bodily injury.
