CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – Corning Community College softball picked up a pair of big wins at home. The Red Barons swept Herkimer in a doubleheader on Saturday, outscoring the Generals 12-6 and 28-7. CCC found themselves in a 6-1 deficit early in the opening game, before rallying back to win. In the 3rd inning, Teona Cruz delivered an RBI-single, scoring Spencer-Van Etten/Candor grad Raegan Sudnikovich. One batter later, Tristan Mancari replicated Cruz’s effort, driving in Brianna Greenlaw.

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) – Local baseball and softball took over the Twin Tiers, kicking off the weekend. Elmira College softball split a doubleheader with Russell Sage on Friday, taking the opening game in extra innings. In Game 1, the Soaring Eagles rallied back from an early deficit, as Katie Distefano delivered a double to score Jocelyn Jean in the 2nd. With the game knotted at 1, Maryann Sobel paced the EC defense for 8 innings, throwing a complete game with 4 strikeouts and no earned runs.

CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) – Several local high school teams earned big wins in lacrosse. Corning, Horseheads, and Watkins Glen/Elmira Notre Dame were all among the winners of Thursday night’s slate of high school boys lacrosse. The Hawks highlighted the night, completing a 2nd half comeback to best Vestal 6-4. Kohl Hogue scored Corning’s 1st goal, kicking off the rally and cutting the deficit to 4-1 at the half. Horseheads rolled past rivals Elmira at home, 16-5.
