A friendship between a Highland teenager and a Scottish footballing legend is raising funds to help children with a devastating skin condition. Isla Grist from the Black Isle lives with what’s known as Butterfly Skin. The 16-year-old inspired Graeme Souness to swim the English Channel in 2023 – now he’s planning to do it again. The former Scotland footballer has put his passion into fundraising for charity DEBRA, which raises awareness of the agonising skin condition Epidermolysis Bullosa.

Plans to create a visitor centre on the Isle of Lewis to commemorate the UK’s worst peacetime maritime disaster since the sinking of the Titanic have taken a step forward. The multi-million-pound visitor centre would tell the story of the disaster of the Admiralty yacht ‘HMY Iolaire’ which claimed the lives of 201 of the 280 men on board when she foundered on rocks by the entrance to Stornoway harbour in the early hours of New Year’s Day of 1919.

It was the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Britain, since the sinking of the Titanic. More than 200 servicemen died in the sinking of the Iolarie in 1919, which was taking them home to Stornoway after the end of the First World War. Now, plans have been unveiled for a multi-million pounds visitor centre, to help to tell their story.
