The head teacher of two Easter Ross primary schools has hailed pupils’ “hard work, dedication and compassion” after they were awarded the Silver “Rights Respecting Schools” award by UNICEF UK. Pupils and staff at Inver Primary and Knockbreck Primary have spent the last two years working towards the accolade, having earned the bronze award in 2023. The achievement recognises their commitment to embedding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into daily school life.

An Easter Ross cat protection charity has issued a heartfelt plea to find a rural home for three young feral kittens who have been languishing in pens for months. The siblings — two grey and white and one grey, all around a year old — were trapped and brought into care by the Tain & District branch of Cats Protection after concerns were raised for their safety.

A BOAT at the heart of four women’s attempts to make history has been turning heads on the Black Isle. Fiona Deakin, from Cromarty, is part of a four-strong crew of women who aim to become the first ever all-female team from Scotland to row across an ocean. They take part in the World’s Toughest Row this December - a 3000-mile race across the Atlantic in a seven-metre ocean-going rowing boat.

A FORTROSE Academy girl has become a Scottish orienteering champion. Taking place over the bank holiday weekend (May 3), the Scottish Orienteering Championships were held on the sand dunes of Barry Buddon near Dundee. Around 500 participants took part in the national event, ranging from age 10 to 80-plus, using a map to navigate between markers on a range of courses from 2km to 16km in length. One of the winners was S2 Fortrose Academy pupil Cora Comisso, who came first in her age group.
