OLYMPIA, Wash. — Spokane's voter-approved camping ban passed with overwhelming support in 2023 should never have been on ballots, the Washington Supreme Court ruled on Thursday. Voters approved an initiative requiring a ban on camping on public property within 1,000 feet of schools, parks and other community facilities, effectively restricting the ability for homeless people to sleep in much of the city.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The Kootenai County Jail booked far more inmates on border patrol holds in the weeks after President Donald Trump was inaugurated for a second term than it did in any month in the preceding year. Records provided by the jail showed the facility held about 65 inmates on immigration-related holds in 2024. In January 28 inmates were held for that reason, including 25 after President Trump was inaugurated. All but one had citizenship in Latin American countries.
