Whitmer answered, to applause from her capacity audience of about 600 at the University of Arizona, in an appearance that sparked some of the most demand for advance tickets of any at the two-day festival.

Basketball icon and Tucson favorite Steve Kerr confirmed Thursday that his childhood home in Pacific Palisades was destroyed by fire this week. "It's a lifetime of memories of occasions and birthday parties and everything else, and to see the destruction seems unfathomable," the Golden State Warriors head coach said at a press conference.

Liberty the emu's adventure with liberation continues, except now, according to its owner, "He's in emu jail."The critter jokingly named after the Liberty Mutual insurance pitchbird slipped out of its pen at an exotic animals ranch on South Nogales Highway overnight Thursday. The next day gawkers photographed Liberty blocking traffic on the highway and peeking into a car window, near Aerospace Parkway and the entrances to a couple of big Tucson employers including Raytheon.

Wanda Harris was on her way to work about 8:30 Friday morning on Tucson's south side, and wondered why traffic was stopped even though there wasn't a red light. Then she saw. "There was an emu out there. It was blocking traffic" on the corner of Nogales Highway and Aerospace Boulevard, near Flight Safety International, where Harris works, and near Raytheon. When the emu started looking into a car window, as if to say "'Who are you? Can you help me?'," Harris decided to snap some photos.
