Wenatchee tabs $550,000 for First Street curb improvements

The Wenatchee City Council approved a $550,000 construction contract for improvements to several intersections along First Street in South Wenatchee as part of the first phase of several improvements coming to the street. The city has identified several issues to First Street, especially the portion of the street between Miller Street and Chelan Avenue where the street is in poor condition, according to a city council agenda report.

The East Wenatchee city government Tuesday voted to enact a 5% gambling tax on pull tabs, another attempt to address its budget deficit by raising an additional $170,000 a year. "There seemed to be a interest in enacting a gambling tax on the on the pull tabs, because we've never had that," Josh DeLay, East Wenatchee Finance Director.

A Wenatchee mural on Fifth Street, east of the BNSF Railway, was demolished Tuesday to make way for new apartments. The mural was painted by Kamryn Corulli and Rebecca Durham and was a staple of the waterfront property there since 2011. The 5.2-acre parcel is owned by Grandview Riverfront Village II LLC, which is owned by real estate developer Scott Wammack. The project appears to be an expansion of the Riverfront Village Apartments located nearby on North Worthen Street.

In a move resembling musical chairs, East Wenatchee City councilmembers tentatively appointed someone already running for city council to replace former councilmember Rob Tidd, who resigned earlier this month. A division of Waste Management, which provides solid waste collection all across the state, operating in Douglas County was fined $152,400 for 254 violations. The fines were levied May 12 by the state Utilities and Transportation Commission. “An investigation found that Waste Management violated state law by providing monthly service to 25 customers rather than the every-other-week service required by the company’s tariff,” according to a commission news release.
