The college will eliminate or consolidate nearly half of Columbia’s programs in a historic overhaul. The Board of Trustees met on Monday, Dec. 16 and approved the recommendations of Senior Vice President and Provost Marcella David to cut or consolidate the college’s academic offerings in order to save money. The college will now offer 33 undergraduate and seven graduate degrees.

The college is increasing tuition another 5% for continuing students for the next school year. New students will pay 10% more. Full-time tuition for the 2025-2026 school year will be $33,886, an increase of $1,614 before financial aid, according to an email from Interim President and CEO Jerry Tarrer sent to students on Tuesday evening, Nov. 12. In another email to faculty and staff, Tarrer outlined a new tiered tuition system.

November 6, 2024 After Donald Trump was declared the winner in the presidential race early in the morning on Wednesday, Nov. 6, Columbia students returned to campus after having a day off with varying reactions. Some students expressed anxiety about a second Trump presidency. James Rabon, a junior creative writing major, said they froze when they woke up to see the news.“It felt like I was still asleep, like what I was seeing wasn’t real. Our country has failed us,” Rabon said.

October 28, 2024 Times of change, even those as imminent as an election season, can often leave people feeling discouraged, anxious and uncomfortable. However, uncertainty also brings opportunity to use our voices to help shape the future we would like to see. The challenge for many young voters is that the change we want to see will not be quick and will not come as fast as our dopamine-chasing world has accustomed us to. I voted in my first election in 2020.

The college plans to eliminate roughly 18 of its 58 majors under a massive overhaul aimed at streamlining the program offerings and carving out a more distinct place in the higher education marketplace. Senior Vice President and Provost Marcella David shared the list of targeted programs with more than 100 faculty members on Wednesday, Sept. 11, and told them the plan was about “right sizing the program mix” as the college seeks to reduce its financial deficit.
