She toured the College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) on a late Friday afternoon, and she saw students recording for WUFT News. Originally, Edelberg wanted to go out of state to branch out.

Oak Harbor City Council has selected a mental health professional to fill its empty seat. Chris Wiegenstein will replace Dan Evans, who resigned April 5. Wiegenstein will serve at least until the results of the Nov. 7 general election are certified on Nov. 28. He and two other candidates also filed to run for the two-year, unexpired term, which will appear on the primary ballot.

An Oak Harbor high schooler will once again compete to be the top junior dog handler in her age group, this time with a massive mastiff by her side. Maryah Love, a junior at Oak Harbor High School, qualified as the United Kennel Club’s number three junior handler. She will be attending an invitation-only top 10 event, the Premier Nationals, in Michigan this June. Love will show her 2-year-old, 100-pound Cane Corso, Bebe, who is the first dog that Love purchased with her own money.

Island Transit will offer bus rides on Sunday for the first time in the agency’s history. Starting May 29, residents will be able to catch a ride on Island Transit buses every day of the week. “These service improvements help essential workers, riders who have no other transportation choice, seniors, disabled and those who seek to reduce their carbon footprint and want a convenient alternative to traveling alone in their vehicles,” said Executive Director Todd Morrow in a press release.

West Whidbey Avenue in Oak Harbor will undergo utility improvements and an overlay this summer. At a May 16 city council meeting, City Engineer Alex Warner said the project extends from Northwest Jib Street to Oak Harbor Street and is approximately half a mile in length. “It’s really three capital projects turned into one contract,” he said. The water main and storm water line will be replaced, along with a full overlay and re-striping of the roadway.
