She toured the College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) on a late Friday afternoon, and she saw students recording for WUFT News. Originally, Edelberg wanted to go out of state to branch out.
Wiegenstein appointed to city council

Oak Harbor City Council has selected a mental health professional to fill its empty seat. Chris Wiegenstein will replace Dan Evans, who resigned April 5. Wiegenstein will serve at least until the results of the Nov. 7 general election are certified on Nov. 28. He and two other candidates also filed to run for the two-year, unexpired term, which will appear on the primary ballot.
Dog handler heads to nationals

An Oak Harbor high schooler will once again compete to be the top junior dog handler in her age group, this time with a massive mastiff by her side. Maryah Love, a junior at Oak Harbor High School, qualified as the United Kennel Club’s number three junior handler. She will be attending an invitation-only top 10 event, the Premier Nationals, in Michigan this June. Love will show her 2-year-old, 100-pound Cane Corso, Bebe, who is the first dog that Love purchased with her own money.
Island Transit to offer Sunday service

Island Transit will offer bus rides on Sunday for the first time in the agency’s history. Starting May 29, residents will be able to catch a ride on Island Transit buses every day of the week. “These service improvements help essential workers, riders who have no other transportation choice, seniors, disabled and those who seek to reduce their carbon footprint and want a convenient alternative to traveling alone in their vehicles,” said Executive Director Todd Morrow in a press release.
West Whidbey Ave. project moves forward

West Whidbey Avenue in Oak Harbor will undergo utility improvements and an overlay this summer. At a May 16 city council meeting, City Engineer Alex Warner said the project extends from Northwest Jib Street to Oak Harbor Street and is approximately half a mile in length. “It’s really three capital projects turned into one contract,” he said. The water main and storm water line will be replaced, along with a full overlay and re-striping of the roadway.
Council selects short list for open seat

Oak Harbor City Council has selected four candidates to interview for its empty seat. Former Councilmember Dan Evans resigned April 5. The appointee to replace him will serve until the results of the Nov. 7 general election are certified on Nov. 28. At a May 16 meeting, City Administrator Blaine Oborn said the city received nine applicants but one was withdrawn. Out of the remaining eight, only one said they did not plan to run for the seat in the election.

A small gathering of children, parents and other onlookers crowded onto a dock at the Oak Harbor marina to witness the release of 30,000 juvenile salmon into the wild. The coho salmon were transported to the marina in mid-January from Marblemount Fish Hatchery in Skagit County. The fish arrived in a large tank on the back of a truck and then traveled down 150 feet of tubing into two wooden pens with nylon knotless net.
Oak Harbor buying boat business

The city of Oak Harbor plans to use grant money to purchase Mariner’s Haven Boatyard, a private business adjacent to the Oak Harbor Marina. At a May 2 city council meeting, members unanimously approved the motion to authorize Mayor Robert Severns to sign and execute all the necessary contracts and documents for the purchase of the boatyard, which is now in escrow. Island County awarded the city a $675,000 Rural County Economic Development grant for the purchase back in September 2020.

Oak Harbor city leaders decided to apply for county grant money to fund dredging of the marina, construction of pickleball courts, remodeling of The Center’s parking lot and sewer expansion in the northern part of the city. At a May 2 city council meeting, City Administrator Blaine Oborn presented a list of possible projects that qualified for Rural County Economic Development grants.
Police chief proposes city drug ordinance

The Oak Harbor Police Department is drafting a city ordinance that would make it illegal to possess non-prescription narcotics in wake of Washington state legislature’s failure to pass a new drug possession law.
