The City of Brampton approved a new bylaw that it hopes will stop the recent religious violence in its region. On Wednesday, city council unanimously passed a new piece of legislation that makes it illegal to protest within 100 metres of a place of worship. “Our goal is to make sure whether you go to a mandir gurdwara, synagogue, a mosque, a church, everyone can pray in peace free of violence and intimidation,” Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said.

More than two weeks have passed since Hassan Ali walked out of a Toronto courtroom a free man, after prosecutors decided not to move forward with a first-degree murder trial against the local rapper. Two days after the charges were stayed, Ali, who goes by the stage name ‘Top5’ joined an online live stream where he boasted about his time in jail. “I had a knife in jail. I had a cheeseburger in jail. I had a phone in jail,” Ali said.

The City of Toronto is still playing catch-up from last year's vacant home tax debacle. The vacant home tax program was created to discourage speculators from keeping empty homes to boost the housing supply in the city. However, about 20 per cent of property owners were unaware they needed to declare occupancy every year, prompting thousands to receive money-owing notices in the mail. In 2023, more than 169,000 complaints were filed, and around 1,100 still need to be reviewed.

A flyer from a Food Basics store four years ago is causing a stir online after users noted the soaring cost of grocery items since then. The flyer from 2020 was shared to the Toronto Reddit board over the weekend, revealing prices as low as $2.99 per pound for chicken thighs or drumsticks and a deal for two one-litre containers of chocolate milk for $3. Last January, a five-pack of chicken breast from a Toronto Loblaws caught the ire of many shoppers for it’s nearly $12.25 per pound pricing.
