A circuit court judge has denied a defense request to withdraw from representing a Yankton man charged with allegedly killing and beheading his girlfriend. Circuit Judge Cheryle Gering ruled Wednesday in the murder case involving Craig Nichols Jr. , 32. He faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and two counts of disobedience of a judicial process (contempt of court).

For the second time in a month, the Yankton County Commission has fired an employee without disclosing the reason. The commissioners took the action at Tuesday’s regular meeting after a two-hour executive session with State’s Attorney Tyler Larsen. In a unanimous vote, the commissioners terminated one employee and placed another worker on administrative leave pending an investigation. On Wednesday, Chairman John Marquardt spoke about the situation with the Press & Dakotan.

BY RANDY DOCKENDORFYankton County has enacted a permanent burn ban, effective immediately, because of the extremely dry conditions resulting in major fires such as last week’s blaze along the James River. The county commissioners unanimously passed the ban — which covers areas outside communities — during their regular meeting Tuesday. The ban will remain in effect until conditions reach a safe level.

PIERRE — During Saturday’s 100th Legislature celebration, Yankton residents were very prominent in the program and festivities. With such a major presence, Lt. Gov. Tony Venhuizen joked that the Yankton trio wanted to return the capital to their hometown. Yankton served as the Dakota Territory capital from 1861 to 1883. However, the community lost the race for the state capital to Pierre in 1889.

CREIGHTON, Nebraska — The Creighton community will be without electricity on Sunday afternoon because of a planned outage. Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) crews will be installing new poles and making minor repairs to the system, according to its website. The outage will last from 1-5 p.m.The repairs are needed heading into a crucial time of year, according to NPPD Account Manager Brittney Koenig. “We appreciate everyone’s patience while this work is completed,” she said in a press release.

NWS: Red flag warning until 8 p.m. Wednesday for wind and low relative humidity for the Yankton region, including south central and southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska. .

U.S. Senator Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) today reintroduced the Returning Education to Our States Act, which would eliminate the U.S. Department of Education and redistribute all critical federal programs to other departments. Rounds first introduced this legislation in November 2024.

SD Gov. Larry Rhoden will visit Yankton and Vermillion Thursday on his Open for Opportunity tour. In Yankton, he will tour the Human Services Center and visit Manitou Equipment and Masaba. In Vermillion, he will meet with USD students and faculty, then attend the VCDC banquet.
