PIERRE — As the Ukraine-Russia war enters its fourth year, David Gall remains personally connected to events a half-world away. Gall wouldn’t seem likely to feel the impact of the ongoing war. “I grew up in Lake Andes, graduated from Andes Central and then graduated from Mount Marty in 2002,” he told the Press & Dakotan. “I have lived in Pierre since 2005.”He has resided in South Dakota his entire life and currently works for state government. Marriage has connected Gall to the war.

In the wake of this week’s state penitentiary assaults and drug busts, Yankton Police Chief Jason Foote and other state task force members are continuing their focus on prison safety. Gov. Larry Rhoden appointed Foote, president of the South Dakota Police Chiefs Association, to the Prison Reset Committee. The 22-member body was formed after the 2025 Legislature rejected a proposed $825 million project in Lincoln County.

HARTINGTON, Neb. — A Laurel, Nebraska, man convicted of murdering four Laurel residents in August 2022 might testify against his wife for her alleged role in one of the deaths. The Nebraska Attorney General’s office filed a motion this week in Cedar County District Court. The AG’s office is seeking to question 45-year-old Jason Jones under oath for the upcoming trial of his 46-year-old wife, Carrie Jones, also from Laurel.

That’s OK, but don’t wait for the opportunities to present themselves.”Rhoden passed along a piece of advice.

VERMILLION — On Wednesday, Gov. Larry Rhoden and U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson shared a stage speaking to Girls Staters on the University of South Dakota campus. Next year at this time, they could be sharing a debate stage for the Republican nomination for governor. Rhoden, the former lieutenant governor, ascended to the governorship last January when former Gov. Kristi Noem resigned to become President Donald Trump’s secretary for the Department of Homeland Security.
