SIOUX FALLS — One person was killed on a Sioux Falls Interstate highway after a semi driver lost control of a trailer, causing it to flip onto the victim’s vehicle. Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, first responders in Sioux Falls were called to mile marker 79 of Interstate 29, near the 12th Street exit, for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

SIOUX FALLS — A Sioux Falls man has been apprehended more than a week after a shooting near the Sioux Falls Law Enforcement Center sent one man to the hospital. Police spokesman Sam Clemens on Thursday, June 12, announced the arrest of Dustin Gallegos Jr., of Sioux Falls, after a warrant was issued for charges of aggravated assault Court records indicate he was also in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia at the time of his arrest.

PARKER, S.D. — The work on a $20 million courthouse in Turner County is officially underway. With shovels in their hands, Turner County officials gathered in Parker on Wednesday, June 11, to break ground on the new courthouse, located in the same location as the old courthouse, at 400 South Main Avenue. The $19.8 million courthouse, funded by bond financing, will stand two stories and feature roughly 34,000 square-feet of space for county administration.

CANTON, S.D. — The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is asking for five new patrol vehicles and three additional deputies for the next fiscal year, all while projecting a 2.8% decrease in the sheriff’s annual budget. Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Swenson made the requests to the Lincoln County Commission on Tuesday, June 10, as part of a budget work session, as commissioners work to determine how the county’s funds will be spent over the next year. Currently, the sheriff’s office has 34 vehicles.

SIOUX FALLS — Getting financial support from the city of Sioux Falls is going to be tougher going forward. Sioux Falls City Hall is preparing to significantly reduce the amount of money it sets aside in its yearly budget for local nonprofits while shifting away from traditional subsidies and instead create a competitive contract selection process. City Finance Director Shawn Pritchett this week outlined the planned overhaul of how the city handles nonprofit funding distributions in its budget.
