JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – When Elton native Clyde W. Gindlesperger arrived at Omaha Beach on June 18, 1944, 12 days after D-Day, “a lot of the dead had been cleaned up,” he said Thursday. About 2,000 men died on Omaha Beach during the U.S. Army’s initial invasion of Normandy in Nazi Germany- occupied France, and there was plenty of death remaining in the area.

PORTAGE, Pa. – History enthusiasts in Portage are about to complete a new mural inside the Lee Street tunnel to welcome riders using the September 11 National Memorial Trail as they pass through the historic community. The mural has been designed and painted onto panels for a few weeks and was awaiting approval by Portage Borough Council. That approval came during council’s regular meeting Monday, Portage Area Historical Society President Irene Huschak said.
