Curwensville students gearing up for Logs2Lumber on Friday

CURWENSVILLE — For the 16th year, Curwensville Area Jr./Sr. High School’s Logs2Lumber Club gears up to host its annual event, which starts at 8 a.m. on Friday and runs throughout the entire school day. “Our shop students and Logs2Lumber club members have worked tirelessly to fundraise, plan, prepare and put on an event with multiple challenges set in front of us,” Logs2Lumber Advisor Jaye Bressler said.

CURWENSVILLE — Chief Mark Kelly of the Curwensville Borough Police Department has resigned from his position after 17 years of service. At Monday’s meeting of the Curwensville Borough Council, Mayor Tim Hoover announced Kelly submitted his letter of resignation on May 7 and his resignation was effective May 7. Hoover read Kelly’s resignation letter at the meeting.
Penn State says 'no decision is final' in response to report revealing potential branch campus closures

DuBOIS — Penn State University released a statement Monday evening saying “no decision regarding any campus is final” after a report was published listing seven possible commonwealth campus closures –including DuBois. The Philadelphia Inquirer, citing “multiple sources,” reported on Monday Penn State administrators are proposing to close seven branch campuses, including DuBois, Fayette, Mont Alto, New Kensington, Shenango, Wilkes-Barre, and York.
Clearfield man pleads guilty to assaulting female

CLEARFIELD — Zackary Scott H. Jenkins, 21, of Clearfield, agreed to plead guilty to sexually assaulting a female at Colloquy Court before Judge Paul. E. Cherry on Monday. Jenkins pleaded guilty to a sexual assault charge graded as a felony of the first degree and would serve a minimum of 54 months in state prison, according to Deputy District Attorney Tami Fees. Jenkins will also have to follow all of the requirements under Megan’s Law, she said.
Liberty Tree ceremony held in Osceola Mills

OSCEOLA MILLS — A Liberty Tree dedication ceremony took place on Saturday at the Osceola Mills Public Square as part of the multi-year celebration for the nation’s 250th anniversary. One liberty tree was placed in the Osceola Mills Public Square in a partnership with America250PA and the Pennsylvania Freemasons. Each ceremony is part of a multi-year initiative to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.
Bridge dedication honors Osceola Mills' 35 WWII heroes

OSCEOLA MILLS — The 35 service members from Osceola Mills who lost their lives during World War II were honored at a bridge dedication held at Osceola Mills Park Friday. The 35 killed is the highest per capita percentage of any town in the United States, state Rep. Dallas Kephart, R-Clearfield, said. “If you think about it, that is quite impressive and one that I am proud of,” Kephart said at the bridge dedication. The Osceola 35 includes two sets of brothers and one woman.

Lawrence Township Supervisors discuss traffic signal issues

CLEARFIELD — The Lawrence Township Board of Supervisors voted to approve the purchase of backup generators for traffic signals at its meeting Thursday night. Township manager Ashley Pritchard reported the traffic signal controller at Fulton Street failed during one of the recent storms. The traffic controller was replaced with a loaner and a new controller was ordered at a cost of $6,000. The township’s insurance will be covering the cost, but there is a $1,000 deductible, Pritchard said.

20 Years AgoThe Clearfield softball team played nearly perfect defense behind pitcher Hilaree Dixon in Thursday’s game with Punxsutawney, and the Lady Bisons were able to come away with a 6-0 win. Dixon allows just four base runners and two hits in the shutout victory. After surrendering a one-out double to Punxsy’s Tiffany Dupont, Dixon retired the next two Lady Chuck hitters she faced, as each grounded out to Lindsey Rowles at shortstop.
St. John Lutheran Church celebrates 175th anniversary

CLEARFIELD — The St. John Lutheran Church of Clearfield is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year. The church is located at 217 E. Pine Street (at the corner of 3rd and Pine streets) and was founded by George Philip Gulich. According to church records, Gulich was born in Hamburg, Germany and settled on a 250-acre farm near the foot of Coal Hill near what is now Riverview Road in 1818.
