President Donald Trump’s now-paused tariffs would have slapped a $40,000 import tax on her roughly $200,000 shipment of hand-painted porcelain dinnerware, cutlery and glassware — all coming from Europe in May.

Bakery owner Ben Ellis spent more than two years researching the ideal machine to mix and separate 400 pounds of dough before ordering heavy-duty equipment in November from the Czech Republic. “This design works incredibly well with our bakery, it’s tight and efficient in a way that we haven’t been able to find anything close from a U.S. company,” said Ellis, who also looked at options in Japan, Denmark, Germany and France, which all have a tradition of making artisan bread.

Newly appointed Jackson Town Councilor Alyson Spery sees her position on the city’s governing board as distinct from her fellow councilors, based on how she got there. “While the four of you ran a campaign to garner the support of the community and the trust of the community, I have not had that opportunity,” Spery told council members during her Thursday interview. After deliberating alternately in public and behind closed doors for three hours Tuesday, the Jackson Town Council narrowed a field of 17 applicants to five finalists to fill the seat vacated by former Councilor Arne Jorgensen, who won the race for mayor in the November general election. The finalists are consultant Shelby Read, architect and Jackson Planning Commissioner Katie Wilson, filmmaker Alyson Spery, radio broadcaster and former Councilor Scott Anderson and educator Rick Gordon.
