click to enlarge After High Falls staple Fina’s Café and Bakery closed at 229 Mill St. in 2020, the area’s options for a daytime bite or caffeinated beverage were next to nil — until Happy Gut Sanctuary and Roc City Ramen opened together in that spot in late November 2023. Together, the businesses offer a variety of fermented teas, coffee, and both Japanese fare and American comfort foods with an Asian flair.

The retail spaces at local chocolate shops Hedonist Artisan Chocolates (674 South Ave.) and Laughing Gull Chocolates (1868 E. Main St.) are small yet bountiful boutiques, packed with scores of creatively flavored truffles, chocolate bark and bars, caramels, drinking chocolate, and more. Playing with chocolate all day might sound like a dream job — and the shop owners say that it is — but it takes serious labor to make a stellar product, and serious ethical considerations go into the craft.

Similarly, meeting a colleague for an out-of-office coffee while surrounded by greenery and bathed in natural light when it’s icy outside is just the ticket. However visitors arrive at the counter of Winter Swan Coffee, housed within Stacy K Floral at 43 Russell St., the ‘Swan Cloud’ — their version of a Vietnamese coffee — is a must-try.
Emerging artists ANO and Jack Cutri paint with minimalist brushstrokes

Such is the case at Fuego Coffee Roasters (1 Woodbury Blvd.), where this month visitors can check out “In Focus,” a show by young painters Emiliano “ANO” Diaz and Jack Cutri, which opens Friday, Feb. 9. Eight paintings from each artist line the white-painted cinder blocks of the cafe’s interior, complementing the space with their spare, minimalist aesthetic. ANO and Cutri both have highly recognizable, engaging styles — a rare quality for young creators.
