MINNEAPOLIS -- Roger Staubach’s Hail Mary pass to Drew Pearson in the 1975 divisional game at Met Stadium could have happened in a game between the Twins and Rangers. Hold on! Twins and Rangers? As the Sports Time Machine looked back at the first season of the Minnesota Twins — for clarity, today’s Major League Baseball team — there was a time when the expansion football team in Minnesota considered the Twins as its nickname.

As springtime weather approaches, let’s turn back the clock 60 years to a recreational sports explosion that hit our region. The Sports Time Machine couldn’t help but notice a full-page photo spread in the April 22, 1965 edition of the Rochester Post-Bulletin while researching a previous story. Children of all ages were pictured with the newest neighborhood toy — the skateboard.

While it was soon set to music, it would take more than 100 years before the tune became relevant enough in the U.S. to become its national anthem.

FARGO — During the 1990s, there was a plethora of so-called minor league sports trying to make their mark in Fargo. The Fever of the Continental Basketball Association, the Express of the American Hockey Association, the Bears and Ice Sharks of the United States Hockey League, the RedHawks of baseball’s Northern League and the Fargo Freeze of the Indoor Football League planted roots by the end of the decade. Only the RedHawks continue to flourish.

FARGO — At the conclusion of the high school boys basketball season, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota name a Mr. Basketball as the state’s best player. The winners are either slam dunks, or in some cases, shared between two recipients. Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball, most recently won in the award's 50th season by Wayzata’s Jackson McAndrew, was first awarded by the Edina Park and Recreation Department in 1975.

The Twins were in the mix. https://t.co/iMSy6jC0fc

Believed to be a fad — and there’s some merit to that — skateboarding became a huge hit in 1965, and along with that, a rash of injuries followed. https://t.co/VKBvkGTCUu

There's the "Kenny" (Kenny Ask) at Edgewood GC in Fargo for a men's club gimme and the "Demo" (Demo Mayasich) in Eveleth for a ball with a fortunate bounce to stay in play. For courses in MN, SD and ND, have you a shot, bounce or situation named for a local player? #golf https://t.co/mYyKP3If7I
