Photographer Lowell Wolff focuses on 'intentional' images in his work

DETROIT LAKES — Though he first started shooting photographs on a film camera back in the 1980s, it wasn't until he retired from a 40-year career as a Fargo educator that Lowell Wolff refocused on photography. "I spent 40 years with Fargo Public Schools, 25 of them as assistant superintendent," says Wolff, whose work is on display at the Detroit Lakes Public Library through the end of May.

DETROIT LAKES — It was a project that was about five years in the making — or several centuries, depending on your point of view. The new multi-tiered exhibit, "Becker County Natural History Preserved in a Peat Bog," opened this past Thursday, April 10, at the Becker County Museum in Detroit Lakes. It contains the bones of two bison that were unearthed from a real peat bog near Frazee more than five years ago, then donated to the museum.

VERGAS — Sunny skies and the promise of pancakes and sausage topped with pure maple syrup proved to be the siren call that a host of lakes area residents couldn't resist this past Saturday. Nearly 750 people picked up a plate of 'cakes and sausage from Vergas Lions and Commercial Club volunteers at the Event Center, then stayed to enjoy the many activities and business specials served up for the community's annual Maple Syrup Festival.

DETROIT LAKES — Besides the hundreds of paid employees who staff WE Fest each year, the country music festival held annually on the first weekend of August at Detroit Lakes' Soo Pass Ranch is also staffed by 300-plus volunteers. These volunteers earn money for their favorite local nonprofits by working shifts at the festival's ticket booths, bars and hospitality tents during the festival, as well as setting up chairs beforehand and cleaning up the grounds afterwards.

VERGAS — The Maple Syrup Festival in Vergas is a long-standing early spring tradition in the lakes area, drawing attention to the region's maple syrup producers and the delicious products that they make. This year's festival is set for Saturday, April 12, and as always, it will start with a pancake feed, co-hosted by the Vergas Lions Club and Commercial Club, which will run from 7:30-11:30 a.m. The pancake feed, as per tradition, will feature pure maple syrup, produced and bottled locally.

FRAZEE — Preschool teacher Nelaina Daggett has staged "life-size" board games for her students before. Daggett, who operated the preschool at Community Alliance Church in Detroit Lakes from 2009 to May of last year, said that she would alternate between organizing life-sized versions of popular board games Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders for her students as a spring activity.
