Outdoor classroom coming to Detroit Lakes this summer

DETROIT LAKES — A pollinator garden that also serves as an outdoor classroom ... that's the concept behind a project slated for installation outside the Detroit Lakes Boys and Girls Club next month. A collaborative project between the Boys and Girls Club, Boy Scouts Troop 674 and the Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America (also referred to as "the Ikes"), the garden classroom will also include an original piece of sculpture created by Troop 674 member Peyton Malecka.

Richard “Dick” Elliot Westlund Sr., 84, of Lake Park, MN, passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at Essentia Health-Oak Crossing, Detroit Lakes, MN, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Dick was born August 23, 1940, in Cormorant Township, one of six children of Albert and Alice (Teigen) Westlund. He attended school at District 10 until 6th grade and then attended Lake Park for 7th grade. Dick began working at the age of 13 in the potato house in Lake Park.

Lana Elise Clark, 37, of Grand Forks, ND, left us peacefully on May 4th. She was discovered in her bed in Saint Paul, MN by her roommates. An accidental overdose is suspected. Lana was born on October 10, 1987, in Charleston, SC. Lana lived with her family in Panama City, Panama, and Emerado, ND, before moving to Grand Forks in 1999. She attended Emerado Elementary, South Middle, and Red River High School. In 2016, she gave birth to her son, Vash Swenson, who she loved dearly.

Donald Marvin Gunderson was born May 22, 1942, in Emerado, ND, to Marvin and Fay Gunderson. He had two older sisters, Shirley and Phyllis. In 1957, the family moved to Northwood, ND where Don excelled in athletics for the Northwood Trojans. On May 25, 1963, Don married Maxine Wasness. The couple moved to Riverside, CA where Don was stationed at March Air Force Base. In 1965, Don was medically discharged from the Air Force and the couple eventually returned to North Dakota.

Beth Ann Christianson was born August 9, 1968, in Grand Forks, ND, the youngest of five daughters of Harvey and Audrey (Holien) Christianson. Soon after Beth’s birth it was realized that her challenges would be many. She met those challenges with the support of her family and caretakers.
