Among the 1,000-plus structures lost in still-raging Southland firestorms are homes of scores of members of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, where St. Mark’s Church in Altadena and parish rectories at St. Matthew’s, Pacific Palisades, also have been destroyed, sources confirm. From the Pacific coast to the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountain range and beyond, thousands of Southern Californians have been evacuated to safe shelters including Episcopal churches and parish halls.

The Milky Way paints itself overhead, and satellites streak across the southern constellations, their paths lit like comets. A tail drums rhythmically against the dog box as Chris picks sandspurs by flashlight from the feet of his pointers. The patterns made by the satellite trails seem reflections of the paths we and the dogs made earlier through lush grass and of the trajectories of swing and shot and flying francolin.

PERHAM — Robert “Andy” Andersen, a Korean War veteran who turned 90 on Aug. 8, has accumulated quite a few interesting stories since he was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1934. He and his wife Donna were married in 1954 and they celebrated 70 years of marriage together on June 12. Andersen turned 17 years old in 1951 and joined the military on his birthday that year.

PERHAM — Chuck Johnson performed his original one-act play, "The Night Before Gettysburg," for a fundraiser hosted by the Friends of the Perham Auditorium on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m. The fundraiser was held to help purchase cordless microphones for future productions. The show centered on the thoughts of Lincoln as he finishes writing his famed address, and reflects on slavery and lives lost in the Civil War.

PERHAM — Street removal on Phase 4 of the Main Street construction project will begin on Wednesday, Aug. 14, according to a monthly update submitted to the Perham City Council by City Engineer Jade Berube. Berube was not present at the City Council meeting held on Monday, Aug. 12, but City Manager Jon Smith, who works closely with Berube, read the update to the council and fielded their questions. Phase 4 of the project runs along Main Street from First Avenue to Fourth Avenue Southwest.
