EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene School District 4J is looking to resolve a controversy that has been on display at some of its schools by removing colorful totem poles from its campuses. Members of local Native American communities raised issues about the totem poles with the school district about a year ago, claiming the totem poles are not reflective of local indigenous people.
Lowell man sentenced to more than 56 years in prison for child sex abuse

EUGENE, Ore. – A 68-year-old man has been sentenced to more than 56 years in prison after being convicted of several charges of sex abuse crimes perpetrated against two children that were known to him, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said. According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, back in 2023 detectives began investigating a report of sexual abuse that was referred to them by the Department of Human Services.

COQUILLE, Ore. – The driver of a pick-up truck that crashed into a bus full of softball team members, killing two, has been charged with numerous crimes including driving under the influence of intoxicants, manslaughter, assault and 14 counts of reckless endangering. At about 9:56 p.m. on April 18, Oregon State Police responded to a reported two-vehicle crash on Highway 42 in Coos County.

PHILOMATH, Ore. – Benton County deputies are investigating a crash that fatally wounded a boy in the back seat of an SUV on Saturday. According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, at about 5:16 p.m. on April 19, deputies responded to a reported two-vehicle crash on Highway 34 near Grange Hall Road in Philomath.

NORTH BEND, Ore. – A man is in jail facing several charges including menacing, recklessly endangering another person and attempted assault after an alleged dispute with neighbors and family on Saturday morning, Coos County deputies said. According to the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, at about 8:20 a.m. on April 19, deputies responded to reports of threats made at a house on Willow Lane in North Bend.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – U.S. Forest Service officials will soon begin conducting controlled burns in parts of the Willamette National Forest to reduce the amount of fuel for possible future wildfires. EUGENE, Ore. – Eugene police are seeking tips in the case of a cat that was shot in a carrier and left to die on a hill earlier in April. According to the Eugene Police Department, at about 3:15 p.m. on April 5, officers responded to Snowberry Road for a report of shots fired. Police said callers told them they had heard several gunshots from a steep hill, then saw a man running down the hill and driving off.
New micro-safe sleep site in Eugene will aid clients of HIV Alliance

EUGENE, Ore. – The homeless community has many layers, and housing to support them does not have a “one size fits all” solution. That’s why the HIV Alliance, Square-One Villages and the City of Eugene are partnering on a new micro-safe sleep site, called the Rainbow Corner. HIV Alliance officials said Rainbow Corner will primarily serve unhoused individuals who are in services at the HIV Alliance.
