NEWPORT, Ore. – The Newport and Oregon fishing community is mourning after a beloved fishing vessel captain went missing when the boat went down in Washington waters. Captain Jon Stevenson of Newport, and the 68-foot “Captain Raleigh,” went down in 40 feet of water in Westport, Washington near the Grays Harbor Bar entrance in the morning of May 9. Reports said the vessel was taking on water at about 8:15 that morning.

SUTHERLIN, Ore. – Numerous firefighters responded to a huge fire at a mobile home park in Sutherlin that injured one resident and killed several pets on Friday. According to the Sutherlin Fire Department, at about 4:29 p.m. on May 9, firefighters were dispatched to a report of a shed on fire in a mobile home park on north Comstock Road. SFD said that while crews were on the way, several callers reported multiple structures had caught fire.

EUGENE, Ore. – After arresting a man on charges related to the alleged theft of a firearm, Lane County Sheriff’s detectives believe the man may have stolen several firearms over a lengthy period of time – and sold them to unsuspecting buyers who may now be in possession of stolen guns. According to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office, on March 26, 2025, a deputy began an investigation into a report of a stolen firearm.

EUGENE, Ore. – A man who was allegedly caught on camera setting a fire in a dumpster on Sunday morning is now in jail on a charge of arson, Eugene police officers said. According to the Eugene Police Department, on May 11, officers responded to a dumpster fire at an auto shop on west Sixth Avenue. Firefighters with Eugene Springfield Fire had already arrived to put out the smoldering fire in a dumpster under the south overhang of the shop.

GLENDALE, Ore. – A Riddle man is in jail after deputies allegedly found fentanyl in his car and home after a traffic stop on Thursday, deputies said. According to the Douglas County Interagency Narcotics Team, at about 4:15 p.m. on May 8, DINT detectives stopped a vehicle traveling north on Interstate 5 in the Glendale area. Detectives said their search of the vehicle turned up about 115 grams of a substance suspected to be fentanyl, along with a small amount of suspected methamphetamine.

EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene Police Department is looking into a possible arson case where an unidentified man allegedly threw an object into a car that started a large fire. According to EPD officials, at about 4:38 a.m. on May 9, Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a reported vehicle fire at 1841 west Broadway. Firefighters arrived to find a 2015 Chevy Cruze completely engulfed by flames. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, but not before it caused an estimated $3,500 in damage.

LEBANON, Ore. – One firefighter suffered minor injuries while fighting a two-alarm fire that burned down a workshop on Thursday, the Lebanon Fire District reported. According to the Lebanon Fire District, on May 8 fire crews responded to a fire that was reported at a large workshop. Firefighters said they arrived to find the workshop completely engulfed in flames, with fire threatening to spread all around the building, and a second-alarm response was called in.
Man found with nearly 9 pounds of meth sentenced to 2 years in prison

EUGENE, Ore. – A man whose home was found to contain large amounts of drugs, cash and guns has been sentenced to two years in prison, according to Lane County justice officials. According to the Eugene Police Department, back in March 2024, police obtained a search warrant for a home in Springfield related to a drug crime investigation. A suspect connected to the home, identified as Joshua James Herrington, 48, was stopped and detained by police officers away from the home, authorities said.
