It’s Business as Usual at the Grumpy Troll Brew Pub in Mount Horeb, which is both true and the name of brewmaster Mark Knoebl’s latest double IPA release. The beer is a tribute to Grumpy Troll co-owner Tim Duerst, who died unexpectedly last November. Duerst grew up in Mount Horeb and was well known among local residents. The IPA style was one of his favorites and Knoebl was in the midst of tweaking this IPA recipe for Duerst just prior to his passing.

Waunakee’s The Lone Girl Brewing Company made a big move when it opened a taproom at 1817 East Washington Ave. in The Marling building last July. While previous tenant O’so Brewing of Plover failed to thrive at the site, The Lone Girl has found a niche on the city’s beer-savvy east side. There’s no on-site brewing at the location, but there’s an amazing list of Lone Girl beers brewed in Waunakee. The Madison taproom has 22 taps, while the Waunakee brewpub has just 14 (which is still a lot).

The Hubbleton Brewery near Waterloo recently released its late winter seasonal, an ESB (extra special bitter). Owner Dan Schey used traditional English yeast and hops to create a smooth, light-bodied ESB. A hint of caramel and biscuit maltiness is carefully balanced with East Kent Golding and Fuggle hops. This is light in alcohol at just 4.5% ABV ($10/six-pack). I’m a regular at the brewery’s small bar and consider this among Hubbleton’s finest beers.

It seems fitting to call out stouts and pub ales in March — beer styles synonymous with St. Patrick’s Day. It’s also bock season. Karben4’s Joe Walts, who handles quality control for the brewery, is known for his special small batch brews that get tapped a couple times a month. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Walts has brewed a dry Irish stout, the style that has come to be defined by Guinness.

New Barons Brewing Cooperative is currently the only Wisconsin brewery based on a cooperative business model where memberships are sold to support its operations. That means shareholders have a voice in how things work, including what beers get made. Since launching in 2016, New Barons has grown to about 650 members who pay $200 for lifetime memberships. Each one gets a free beer on every visit, they can weigh in on beer recipes and ideas, and receive discounts on merchandise.
