Biergarten season has arrived. Since 2020’s COVID restrictions forced creative solutions, outside seating at breweries and brewpubs has become a staple. But what separates run-of-the-mill outdoor seating from something approaching the spirit of a real German biergarten? A biergarten is not a few tables on the sidewalk with a view of traffic. A biergarten is an atmospheric achievement. It is an outdoor space with a communal vibe. Its sense of place is as distinctive as a public park.

If you’re heading to Milwaukee anytime soon, perhaps for Summerfest, the Copper Turtle Brewery and Taverne is walking distance from the festival grounds. The Copper Turtle, at 330 East Menomonee St., is a small brewery that is perhaps just as well known in the neighborhood for its cocktails and rapid infusions, where customers build their own mixed drink. On a recent Saturday afternoon there was barely an available seat as hockey fans leaving the nearby Oregon Ice Arena celebrated with coffee, craft beer, tacos and nachos. There is more to this craft brewery than good beer. It is also a taqueria, coffee bar, and bicycle shop — joyfully sharing space at 201 Concord Drive in Oregon. The offbeat formula seems to be working for Bodihow.

It’s Business as Usual at the Grumpy Troll Brew Pub in Mount Horeb, which is both true and the name of brewmaster Mark Knoebl’s latest double IPA release. The beer is a tribute to Grumpy Troll co-owner Tim Duerst, who died unexpectedly last November. Duerst grew up in Mount Horeb and was well known among local residents. The IPA style was one of his favorites and Knoebl was in the midst of tweaking this IPA recipe for Duerst just prior to his passing.
