Police have launched an investigation into the deaths of heart surgery patients at an East Yorkshire hospital. The investigation is focusing on transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedures carried out on elderly and frail patients at Castle Hill hospital, near Hull. There have been no arrests in connection with the investigation, which Humberside police said was in its “very early stages”.

Fire stations in England are “falling apart”, fire chiefs have warned, with funding plummeting by an estimated £1bn in the last decade as callouts have increased by a fifth. Fire and rescue must not become the “forgotten emergency service”, the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) urged, warning of mounting pressures that “risk undermining public and firefighter safety”, as it responds to more 999 calls with fewer firefighters.

The high costs of having a child using a sperm donor are driving poor and marginalised women in the UK to use unregulated online services rife with “weirdos” and misogynists in order to have a child, experts have said. In a ruling released on Wednesday, a Middlesbrough family court judge said a man who claimed to have fathered more than 180 children across the world as an unregistered sperm donor could not have custody of one of the children.

The R&B singer Chris Brown has been arrested in Manchester over an alleged bottle attack at a London nightclub two years ago. The US musician was arrested at a hotel in the city in the early hours of Thursday by detectives from the Metropolitan police. He is being held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm at a nightclub in Mayfair, central London, in February 2023. The Sun said the 36-year-old flew into Manchester airport on a private jet on Wednesday afternoon.
