HALSEY — "Moon trees" from NASA's Artemis project have germinated at the Nebraska National Forest nursery and are ready to ship out to different places across America. During the Artemis 1 mission, seeds from different tree species were loaded in the Orion spacecraft for its trip around the moon. A similar program was done during the Apollo missions, with moon trees planted across the nation after NASA shipped seeds in a mission around the moon.

A plea deal is in the works for David D. Cooper, 49, according to his attorney Martin Troshynski. Cooper had been scheduled Monday for a pretrial hearing in Lincoln County District Court, but Troshynski asked for a continuance to Aug. 19 so Cooper and the Lincoln County Attorney's Office can continue working on a plea agreement. Cooper is charged with two felony counts of first-degree sexual abuse by a school employee, third-degree sexual abuse by a school employee and tampering with a witness.

A three-judge panel ruled Wednesday in favor of west central Nebraska law enforcement in a federal civil rights case appeal. The three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an August 2020 U.S. District Court ruling that deputies were within their rights to use deadly force during a 2018 chase.

Festival-goers celebrated trains throughout North Platte Saturday during the annual Rail Days. Kids were able to enjoy tractor rides, remote control obstacle courses bounce houses and outdoor activities at Cody Park through Tractors, Trucks, Trains and Planes. The Lincoln County Historical Museum hosted a pulled pork and corn feed, bringing in more than 300 patrons to sample the food. It was a record year according to Jim Griffin, executive director and curator at the museum.

Brady residents and the general public had family fun with the start of Brady Days on Friday. Starting with sidewalk chalk art drawing, the town of Brady hosted many kid-friendly activities for friends and family to participate. Brady held a barbecue supper accepting freewill donations and offering brisket, a side dish and dessert. They held a small parade for kids and pets on Main Street.
