This year marks the 160th anniversary of Juneteenth, and in the Chattanooga area, there are plenty of ways to observe the holiday. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas received word of their freedom — two years after U.S. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Juneteenth is observed annually on June 19, and it was declared a federal holiday in 2021.
