A Leeds shopkeeper has described how people come into his shop begging for food and money every day. Liaquat Ali, 58, owns Mobile Shop in Harehills Lane. He sells a range of technical products, carries out repairs and handles international money transfers. Liaquat acknowledges that crime and poverty are pervasive matters in the East Leeds suburb. The area made national headlines in July 2024 when a riot broke out after children were seized from a home.

A police incident has closed a major road through Yorkshire. The A1M in North Yorkshire has been blocked between junction 57 to Darlington and junction 58 to West Auckland Road. The undisclosed 'police incident' is happening on the northbound carriageway and began to unfold just before 2pm today (Wednesday, February 26). Travel data site Inrix said: "A1(M) Northbound blocked, severe delays due to police incident between J57 A66(M) Darlington and J58 A68 West Auckland Road (Burtree).

A man has been arrested in Leeds on suspicion of attempted rape after a woman's cries for help alerted a member of the public. The woman could be heard screaming for help while a man pulled her to the ground in Cemetery Road, near to the junction with Beeston Road, at 5.57am today (Wednesday, February 26). After police attended, the woman was no longer there. A man, who was in the vicinity, has been arrested and remains in custody. West Yorkshire Police are attempting to find the woman.

A pedestrian has been rushed to hospital after they were hit by a car in Knaresborough. The person was hit on High Street at 8.58am today (Wednesday, February 26). They were taken to Harrogate District Hospital. The road has been closed while police investigate. A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received an emergency call at 8.58am this morning (Wednesday 26 February) to report a collision between a car and a pedestrian on High Street in Knaresborough.
