Reading West and Mid Berkshire MP Olivia Bailey welcomed the news that Brookfield’s School in Tilehurst had secured government funding for two maintenance and safety projects. These projects will ensure that pupils are in an environment where they can “achieve and thrive safely”, she said.

    Pupils from a North Hampshire school helped marked the official start of construction of a new housing development, writes Maisie Day. The Burghclere Primary School pupils marked the major milestone as Bewley Homes officially commenced construction on the development at Princess Gardens, Bishop’s Green. Year 4, 5 and 6 children, accompanied by school administration manager Vanessa Pummell, took part in a special ground-breaking ceremony led by Bewley Homes managing director Andrew Brooks.

    Published: 12:30, 31 May 2025 Two heavy goods vehicle drivers have been fined after breaching weight restrictions in West Berkshire. In July 2024, Reading Magistrates’ Court heard that a member of the public observed an HGVs travel through the weight restriction on Church Lane in Aldermaston while exceeding the weight limit. The maximum weight limit for the road is 7.5 tonnes, but the vehicle’s gross weight was 18 tonnes.

    This month has seen one Newbury business celebrating its first birthday with a party, a rebrand and a new menu. May marks 12 months since Hugo Lesser opened Gourmet Pasta Co in Market Place. And Mr Lesser is celebrating in style on Saturday (May 31) with a special birthday party at the restaurant. There will be a DJ and as much pasta as revellers can eat. Tickets cost £37 and include a welcome drink and dessert. The restaurant also now enjoys a new name – and signage to match.

    Lockkeepers and weir operators along the River Thames have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action, voicing serious safety concerns, writes Maisie Day. Trade union GMB announced that more than 90 per cent of workers, employed by the Environment Agency, advocated for the walkout, with an exceptional turnout of 98 per cent. It said that many felt that budget-focused decisions are endangering lives, as well as property.
