Mahjong, an ancient Chinese game, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity across the Birmingham metro area, with local meetups and lessons drawing enthusiasts eager to learn and socialize. Every Monday morning, the O'Neal Library in Mountain Brook hosts a mahjong meetup. "It's exciting, it's fun and it's fast paced," said Katie Moellering, adult services department manager at the library. Mahjong is played with 152 tiles featuring three different suits: cracks, bams and dots.

This week, Deer Valley Elementary School in Hoover hosted "The Great Shake," a competition where fourth and fifth grade students test their professional skills. Nicole Stokes, principal at Deer Valley, said the competition is inspired by a program at The Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. "It's an opportunity for students to engage with community members and to showcase their leadership skills," Stokes said.

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a freight train late Sunday night in Bessemer, according to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.The incident happened at about 10:45 p.m. in the 5500 block of Avenue A in Bessemer. According to Deputy Coroner Bill Yates, the unidentified man was pronounced dead minutes after crews arrived on the scene. The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Two of the surviving victims of the deadly boat crash on Smith Lake are considering legal action. On Wednesday, April 16, three people were killed and three others were injured when two boats collided on Smith Lake during the Major League Fishing Tackle Warehouse Invitational Tournament. Joey M. Broom, 58, of Altoona, John K. Clark, 44, of Cullman, and Jeffrey C. Little, 62, of Brandon, Mississippi, were all killed when the Center Console boat they were on was struck by a Nitro Bass Boat.

New video released by the city of Tuscaloosa shows the moment a University of Alabama graduate student was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The video, obtained by WVTM 13 through a records request with the city of Tuscaloosa, shows ICE agents walking Alireza Doroudi down Reed Street. The graduate student from Iran appears to be cooperating with the agents. Doroudi is currently working on his doctorate in mechanical engineering at the University of Alabama.
