Federal cuts and tariffs are likely to make the shortfall even bigger. Johnson got the process underway early by sending a letter to all aldermen, outlining a series of conversations to begin this month. Some alders say the talks must start with cuts.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Job cuts and closures are coming for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. President Donald Trump's administration is laying off over 10,000 workers and shutting down entire agencies. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is calling the department he now oversees an inefficient sprawling bureaucracy. There is an impact on local agencies, as well. The 10,000 jobs cut are in addition to 10,000 workers who have chosen to leave through buyouts or early retirements at HHS.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Voter suppression is what voting rights groups say will be the consequence of a new executive order from President Donald Trump. Groups also say the order is unconstitutional. Registering to vote in Illinois requires residents to prove who they are and where the live. Several different forms of identification are acceptable. The U.S. Constitution gives the states the authority to run elections.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The Archdiocese of Chicago is taking aim at a group of people who claim they were sexually abused by a disgraced former priest. The archdiocese says they have proof their claims are false, and were conceived as a way to make money. He is considered Chicago's most notorious former priest accused of child sexual abuse. Daniel McCormack has cost the archdiocese millions of dollars. Yet, a new lawsuit alleges some of the claims were false.

Although, President Donald Trump has been in office for two months, there have been dozens of lawsuits filed against his administration, including Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul. "We not being frivolous, these are real harms that are coming to our respective states and the American peoples at large," Raoul said. The state attorney has joined 20 other Democratic state attorneys general for several lawsuits, many surrounding the Elon Musk DOGE firings of federal workers.
