The building that now houses Samm’s Last Chance Saloon in Edwardsville has quite a history, and Arlene Stephenson has been there for nearly all of it. Stephenson, 80, has worked at the bar for 59 years, working for seven different ownerships and five different names. Her last day on the job is Tuesday, June 10, and a special party in her honor is scheduled for Monday, June 9.

For Edwardsville resident Kathryn Biarkis, there's nothing more enjoyable than sharing her enthusiasm for local history. Biarkis, whose family history in the area dates to the 1800s, is a longtime member of the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission and also serves on the city's Tourism Advisory Committee. "My dad's side of the family came to the U.S. in 1843, and many Germans were immigrating at that point," Biarkis said.
