PIEDMONT, Ala. (WIAT) — Palm Sunday marks the beginning of week of reflection for Christians around the world. In the town of Piedmont, the holiday also serves as a reminder of a deadly tornado. 31 years ago, an EF-4 tornado hit the Goshen United Methodist Church. Twenty people, including 6 children, were killed. Three decades later the community says they are still healing. Keith Word was at the Goshen United Methodist Church on Palm Sunday in 1994 with his wife and children.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — This week is National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. To commemorate the week, the Alabama chapter of Voices of Black Mothers United held a Youth Summit in Birmingham. The organization’s goal is to find solutions to gun violence. Sunday, a room full of families who have lost loved ones to gun violence came together to advocate for change and find ways to end shootings in their communities. Marqurita Treadwell lost her son in 2023.

MIDFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) — For three years, an industrial plant in Midfield has been closed. Those who live near the plant said when work stopped, waste and equipment were left behind. One woman reached out to CBS 42 News saying she was worried about the effect the materials were having on her health. The plant was closed in 2022 after what records describe as a catastrophic fire. At that time, McCabe Industrial Minerals, who was leasing the plant from Dunn Construction, operated the plant.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Thousands from around the country are in the Magic City this weekend for the women’s NCAA basketball regional. The excitement from the game extends off the court. We spoke with fans who came from all around the country. They say they had as much fun outside the arena as they did inside. Tyler Stanfield and his son, Carter, travelled from Tennessee to cheer on the Lady Vols Saturday. “We came to cheer on the Vols, go Vols!” Stanfield said.

The Birmingham Fitness Center North, more commonly known as the Smithfield Fitness Center, is a vital resource for people who live in the community. For one man, it’s helping save his life. Cleophus Riles Jr. suffered a stroke eight months ago. Since then, he’s had to relearn how to walk.
