CLEVELAND — The union representing Cuyahoga County corrections officers is calling for changes in the way the county screens applicants following a series of high-profile incidents involving what leaders call inappropriate relationships between jailers and the inmates they’re paid to watch over. “Is this just jailers gone wild in some cases?” News 5 Investigators asked Adam Chaloupka, an attorney with the Ohio Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, the union representing the county’s officers.

CLEVELAND, OH — Citing what they called a serious and escalating course of criminal conduct, prosecutors are asking a judge to sentence East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King to prison following his conviction on corruption charges. A jury found King guilty on 10 criminal counts, including theft in office, having an unlawful interest in a public contract, representation by a public official, filing a false financial disclosure statement and soliciting improper compensation.

EAST CLEVELAND, OH — Auditors discovered $1.5 million in outstanding bills owed by the City of East Cleveland to vendors who performed services or provided goods to the city, according to the chairwoman of the city's Financial Planning and Supervision Commission. And now, confusion over who's running the city following Mayor Brandon King's felony convictions last week is delaying a proposal to raise East Cleveland's spending limits in an effort to settle those delinquent bills.

There's a big question hanging over East Cleveland right now: Who is the city's current mayor? City Council President Lateek Shabazz took to social media on Sunday to announce that he has been sworn in to replace Brandon King, who was convicted of criminal charges last week. Shabazz made the announcement on Facebook. "With the conviction of former Mayor Brandon L. King and because of the East Cleveland Charter I have been sworn in as Mayor of East Cleveland," Shabazz wrote in the post.

CLEVELAND — The jurors hearing the theft-in-office case of East Cleveland Mayor Brandon King and former Councilman Ernest Smith have reached a verdict. King was found guilty on one count of theft in office, four counts of having an unlawful interest in a public contract, three counts of representation by a public official or employee, one count of filing a false disclosure statement and one count of soliciting or receiving improper compensation.
