May 10—JUNEAU — Gov. Mike Dunleavy wants the Alaska Legislature to form a "joint team" with his administration to forge a long-term fiscal plan for the state. The Legislature is grappling this year with a substantial deficit and a dire fiscal outlook due to diminished oil revenue. The Senate approved an austere budget this week ahead of final negotiations with the House. Lawmakers have warned the state's fiscal outlook likely will be even more dire next year.

JUNEAU — Alaska school superintendents said Thursday that Gov. Mike Dunleavy told them he would veto a bipartisan education bill, and potentially reduce school funding in the budget, unless the Legislature approves his education policy priorities. The Legislature broadly approved House Bill 57 last month. It includes an annual $177 million school funding increase, and a suite of policies intended to improve Alaska’s bottom-of-the-nation test scores.

JUNEAU — The Alaska Senate on Monday unanimously advanced a measure requiring greater legislative oversight of the state’s oil and gas tax collections. Lawmakers have been frustrated that they don’t have a full picture of those tax collections that can total hundreds of millions of dollars per year.

Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has upended U.S. relations with Canada by threatening to annex the country and by imposing tariffs on Alaska’s eastern neighbor. In response, the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia is considering a toll on trucks that bring goods through Canada to Alaska.

JUNEAU — Just under 18 months out from next year’s general election, two Republicans have filed to run for governor next year: Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom and former Fairbanks Sen. Click Bishop. Bishop and Dahlstrom on Monday both filed letters of intent to run for Alaska governor in next year’s general election. That filing allows Dahlstrom and Bishop to start making campaign expenditures and to fundraise. A letter of intent is the first step to formally announcing a candidacy for office. Gov.
