JUNEAU — The Alaska House advanced the operating budget to the Senate on Wednesday with a roughly $1,400 Permanent Fund dividend and a $450 million-plus deficit over two fiscal years. This year, legislators are facing a dire fiscal outlook and a sizable deficit based on status quo spending. The size of this year’s dividend is competing against widespread calls to substantially increase school funding, and all other spending in the budget.

JUNEAU — The Alaska House this week amended its draft budget to cut Medicaid funding for so-called optional treatments for gender dysphoria. Multiple lawmakers said if the proposed cut is ultimately approved by the Legislature, it would likely not cut health care for transgender Alaskans. But that remains unclear. JUNEAU — The Alaska Senate on Tuesday unanimously voted to advance the capital budget, which has an emphasis on school maintenance funding. The $2.9 billion capital budget is used to fund infrastructure and maintenance projects across the state. The vast majority of funding for the capital budget comes from federal sources. Gov. Mike Dunleavy proposed a capital budget in December at a cost of over $280 million to the state treasury.

Apr. 12—JUNEAU — The Alaska Legislature on Friday narrowly approved a $1,000 increase to the Base Student Allocation, the state's per-student funding formula, but many legislators say the measure is likely doomed. Gov. Mike Dunleavy has vowed to veto House Bill 69 unless policy provisions are added "to improve educational achievement." Multiple lawmakers have said they likely don't have the votes to override Dunleavy's looming veto.
