San Antonio is a better place today than it was nearly a decade ago, Mayor Ron Nirenberg said at his final State of the City address on Tuesday. That reflection comes in the final weeks of his eight years leading the city. The UTSA Institute of Texas Cultures is coming down. On Monday, a Bexar County judge ruled that demolition of the museum and 1968 World’s Fair building can continue despite opposition by preservationists who had hoped for a pause. “We are grateful that the court took the time to carefully consider this matter,” said University spokesman Joe Izbrand.

As crews continued to dismantle the massive concrete walls of the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) on Thursday, less than a mile away, the Conservation Society of San Antonio stood before a Bexar County District judge pleading for a pause. On April 2, the 100-year-old preservation group filed for a restraining order and temporary injunction, asking a judge to stop what appeared to be a demolition of the 1968 World’s Fair structure.

City officials took steps Thursday toward building a new ballpark in downtown San Antonio while also approving payments for upgrades to the existing Missions baseball stadium. City Council voted unanimously to OK spending more than $258,000 on improvements to Nelson W. Wolff Stadium and to creating an entity that will own a planned new ballpark in downtown San Antonio.

Bexar County has joined an effort to develop a planned 100-mile trail between the Texas Capitol and the Alamo — with a stop at the Hays Street Bridge on the East Side of San Antonio. Bexar County commissioners directed staff to work with the organizers of the Great Springs Project to develop a greenway trail connecting the historic bridge to the Salado Creek Greenway Trail.

After abrupt layoffs at a small federal agency threaten essential funding, and humanities and culture groups nationwide see their funding terminated overnight, two San Antonio museums are speaking out. On Monday, the staff who process grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) were put on administrative leave following President Donald Trump’s executive order shrinking seven federal agencies.
