    A new $20,000 state grant is helping a Rock Island nonprofit help more people in need of food and housing. Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced on Friday that Christian Care, which offers shelter, food and support services for homeless people and transitional housing for veterans received a $20,000 Charitable Trust grant. The grant was one of 10 awarded to small nonprofits throughout the state as part of the treasurer’s Charitable Trust Stabilization Program.

This year’s group of students from area high schools has awarded $37,500 to 12 local nonprofits, including $27,500 that the students raised through their direct work with donors. The Teens for Tomorrow program has granted over $295,000 to local nonprofits.

    A woman from Davenport who was arrested in June 2024 on attempted murder and other assault charges has been sentenced. Court records show Kyana Grimes, 32, entered into a plea agreement on February 19. Counts of attempted murder, domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury and first-degree kidnapping, along with one count of violation of a no contact order were dropped.
