A fishing boat is anchored Monday morning not far from the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf as a thick fog bank covers the Monterey Bay off the Santa Cruz County coastline. The fog cleared by mid-morning and the National Weather Service forecast calls for patchy morning fog on Tuesday before clearing for the rest of the week. High temperatures are predicted to be in the 70s at the coast and in the low 80s in the San Lorenzo Valley over the next few days.

Construction proceeds as the former site of Ross Dress For Less at Gateway Plaza in Santa Cruz is being transformed into a New Leaf Community Market grocery store. New Leaf’s new store, which is expected to open this year, will be larger than its Pacific Avenue location, which shuttered its doors permanently in 2024. Meanwhile, the Ross store is relocating to the former home of Office Max across the parking lot from their prior location.

Towering over the Redwood Loop Trail at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, tree No. 7 on the trail guide is aptly named “The Giant.” It towers approximately 270 feet and is around 1,500 years old. The grove where The Giant is located was the first coast redwood grove to be saved from logging. In 1930, Santa Cruz County purchased 120 acres near Felton from the Welch family including the 40-acre Big Tree Grove where the Redwood Loop Trail is located.
