Swimmer who died in Malta 'one of Athlone's characters'

An Irishman who died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea in Malta has been named locally as Noel Ryan. A native of Athlone, Co Westmeath, Mr Ryan was a well-known businessman and operated a retail business in the town for almost 50 years. The 78-year-old died while swimming off the seaside town of St Julian's. It is understood Mr Ryan was on holiday with his family when the incident happened.

The head of WEEE Ireland, the country's national compliance scheme for the recycling of e-waste, has said European recycling targets set more than a decade ago fail to account for the real impact of the circular economy. Leo Donovan said Ireland's ability to meet the EU's 65% recycling target is moving further out of reach every year - not because we are failing but because they do not consider the extended lifespans of modern electronics - or the growing emphasis on repair and reuse.

Home care provider Dovida announces 1,500 new jobs

Private provider of home care services Dovida has announced the creation of 1,500 jobs across Ireland. The company, which has recently rebranded from Home Instead, delivers care to almost 8,000 clients. The roles will be both full- and part-time positions. Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke has welcomed the announcement. Speaking at Dovida's midlands base in Mullingar this afternoon, Minister Burke said it was a "very positive development for communities across the country".
Minister hopes to bring forward competitive action plan

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke said he hopes to bring a memo to Cabinet next week that will set out bringing forward the Government's competitive action plan. Minister Burke said he will also be setting out "15 clear wins" or measures that the Government can take in the short term. He said this will send a "really strong signal to business" that Ireland is going to retain the most competitive economy in Europe.

Russian intelligence ship has left Irish waters

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence has said that a Russian intelligence-gathering ship has "left our area of interest". Speaking during a visit to Athlone, Simon Harris said the Defence Forces had been monitoring the vessel off the Irish coast for around 36 hours. Mr Harris said he has been kept updated on the situation. It is understood that LÉ Samuel Beckett was dispatched to monitor the Viktor Leonov as it sailed towards Havana in Cuba.
