    A judge in Co Kildare has said he wants to set the record straight in relation to the case of Evan Fitzgerald, who died during a shooting incident in Carlow town on Sunday evening. The 22-year-old fired a shotgun into the air a number of times at Fairgreen Shopping Centre, before he died from a self-inflicted wound. Nobody was injured by the shots fired. A young girl in the centre with her parents sustained a minor leg injury when she fell while running from the scene.

    A man aged in his 80s has died following a house fire near Castlepollard in Co Westmeath. Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at Gilbertstown, around 1am. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to the mortuary at Regional Hospital Mullingar. A post mortem examination is due to take place later. it comes a day after a man and woman were killed in a house fire in Co Galway.

    A pair of rare common cranes, which have previously nested at a bog in Co Offaly, have returned for a seventh consecutive year. The pair, which have successfully reared five chicks in the last three years, have been seen back at their favoured nesting site by an ecologist working for Bord na Móna (BnM). Following careful monitoring it has now been established that the pair are once again incubating eggs. The location of the nest is confidential in order to protect and conserve the birds.

    On 22 August 1996 Fiona Pender and her mother Josephine headed into Tullamore. Fiona was seven months' pregnant at the time and went to town shopping for baby clothes. 25-year-old Fiona Pender and her mother were very close. Both were excited about the arrival of the baby in October. Fiona was glowing, full of hope and expectation.
