750,000 trees planted in 100 Million Trees Project

Some 750,000 trees have been planted at mini-forest locations in Ireland in the last two and a half years, as part of the 100 Million Trees Project. Founded in 2022 by siblings Richard, David and Tina Mulcahy, they hope to plant another one million trees across the country next year. "I realised that I was a contributor to the climate crisis, and I thought that we really need to do something now," explained Richard Mulcahy.
Brothers share lifelong bond after kidney donation

Brothers Seán and Séamus Fitzpatrick from Mount Temple in Co Westmeath share a bond like no other. Seán Fitzpatrick was just nine years old when he became sick but it wasn't until he was 16, after a car crash, that doctors discovered his kidneys were failing. Seven years later Seán was told he needed a transplant and, after testing, his brother Séamus stepped up and donated his kidney to his younger brother. "I wouldn't have a life without him," Seán said.

New technology has been set up in an area around the Shannon Callows near Athlone, Co Westmeath to monitor for the presence of critically endangered corncrake birds. The National Parks and Wildlife Service is hoping that this new recording technology will provide more comprehensive information about whether the corncrake has returned to the area.

Funeral of four-year-old Abdur Rehman takes place

The funeral of the four-year-old boy who died after being knocked down in Mullingar on Easter Monday has taken place. Hundreds of people gathered for prayers at the Islamic Cultural Society Centre in Mullingar this afternoon. Four-year-old Abdur Rehman will be buried in Newcastle cemetery in Dublin this afternoon. Yesterday, friends of the family spoke of their devastation and said the little boy was loved by all who knew him.
Tidy Towns no longer to pay insurance costs under deal

Tidy Towns groups across the country will no longer have to pay for insurance, as part of a new agreement between local authorities and Irish Public Bodies Insurance. It is hoped the move will ease the financial and administrative burden on groups across the country who rely on volunteers and local authority supports. There are over 1,000 Tidy Towns groups nationwide who will benefit from this initiative.
Swimmer who died in Malta 'one of Athlone's characters'

An Irishman who died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea in Malta has been named locally as Noel Ryan. A native of Athlone, Co Westmeath, Mr Ryan was a well-known businessman and operated a retail business in the town for almost 50 years. The 78-year-old died while swimming off the seaside town of St Julian's. It is understood Mr Ryan was on holiday with his family when the incident happened.
Circular economy not accounted for in EU targets - WEEE

The head of WEEE Ireland, the country's national compliance scheme for the recycling of e-waste, has said European recycling targets set more than a decade ago fail to account for the real impact of the circular economy. Leo Donovan said Ireland's ability to meet the EU's 65% recycling target is moving further out of reach every year - not because we are failing but because they do not consider the extended lifespans of modern electronics - or the growing emphasis on repair and reuse.
