Skye SeippAustin American-StatesmanAustin police are searching for a person suspected of killing a man on Saturday at a Southeast Austin homeless encampment and then lighting his body on fire to cover up the crime. The victim has not been identified but was a homeless white or Hispanic male who possibly went by the nickname "JT," according to a Monday news release from the Austin Police Department. The killing is being investigated as Austin's first homicide of 2025.

After 44 years, detectives with the Austin Police Department's Cold Case Unit filed murder charges against a man in connection to Susan Leigh Wolfe's death. A Travis County grand jury on Tuesday indicted a 78-year-old man for the 1980 kidnapping, murder and rape of a University of Texas student. Using DNA evidence, Austin police earlier this year identified Deck Brewer Jr. as a likely culprit in the slaying of 25-year-old Susan Leigh Wolfe and issued an arrest warrant for him in August.

Three Fort Cavazos soldiers were arrested and charged with human smuggling after attempting to bring in three undocumented people across the U.S.-Mexico border last week, officials said Wednesday. According to the U.S. attorney's office of the Western District of Texas, the three soldiers of the Army base formerly known as Fort Hood near Killeen were arrested on Nov. 27 after a Border Patrol agent attempted to stop a vehicle in the West Texas border town of Presidio.
