And before the mob dispersed and the gridlock in that Hillsboro neighborhood finally eased last Saturday, Wyden didn’t take the lead in consoling the panicked, impassioned crowd. Many of those folks arrived an hour early, anxiety and alarm in tow.

Donald Trump’s return to power is a daunting reminder of what can be done with it when you are unchecked and unbalanced, convinced you are anointed by God. In short order, Trump moved to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants, upending the guarantees of the Fourteenth Amendment. He issued a virtual blanket pardon to those who ran riot on Jan. 6, even the “day-of-love” thugs who attacked Capitol Police.

For the last 30 years, he has remained tirelessly committed to Southwest Trails, a 50-mile network of footpaths in a city that is hard pressed to invest in sidewalks. Foresight? Baack, 87, is fully armed. Eyesight, however, is a debilitating problem. His right eye is toast, and his left eye beginning to fail.

At 9 a.m. on the last Wednesday of October, Scott Brown – juror No. 11 – finally took his seat on the 17th floor of the Multnomah County Courthouse. A downtown Portland book dealer, Brown was one of 259 Oregonians who lined up two days earlier in the rain to pass through the metal detectors enroute to their civic duty. In August 2010, twenty-two Oregonians journeyed to the Gulf Coast to plumb the devastation wrought by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Mike Rosen, the city of Portland’s watershed manager at the time, organized the trip, which was designed to produce a documentary, graphic novel and high-school curriculum that bore witness to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.
