AFFTON — Maureen McVey tried to temper the enthusiasm. The St. Joseph's Academy girls soccer coach simply could not keep her players from a picture-taking celebration on Wednesday afternoon. The Angels scored three unanswered second-half goals to knock off previously unbeaten Cor Jesu 4-3 in a high-powered GISL contest in southern Affton. "It's just one game, no pictures," said the veteran McVey, who is stepping down after this season.

WOOD RIVER — Paige Webb was all set to enjoy a beautiful afternoon in the sun. The Columbia High right fielder didn't expect to see much action in Tuesday's Cahokia Conference Mississippi Division softball contest at East Alton-Wood River. "I figured I'd be out there most of the game, just chilling," Webb said. Yep, Webb was out in the field all day long. But not chilling. The junior righthander came on to pitch in the very first inning after starter Emily Webb came down with a sore back.

Battlehawks quarterback Manny Wilkins is out for the remainder of the United Football League season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot early in Saturday's loss at Arlington. The gruesome injury came on the fourth play from scrimmage. Wilkins' right leg collapsed as he tried to cut on an apparent quarterback draw up the middle. He fell untouched to the ground. The leg was immobilized and he was carted off the field at Choctaw Stadium.

The St. Louis Battlehawks could not have envisioned a tougher start Saturday. Or a more painful ending. St. Louis put itself in a two-possession, first-quarter hole that simply ended up too deep as a second half rally fell short in a 30-15 loss to the Arlington Renegades in a United Football League contest at Choctaw Stadium in Arlington, Texas. "Our guys were pushing in the fourth quarter," Battlehawks coach Anthony Becht said.

Arlen Harris was up to his waist in water on a peaceful fly fishing excursion in Arkansas last month. The former St. Louis Rams running back checked his phone for a brief minute. A certain posting caught his eye. He noticed that Timberland High school's longtime football coach Ed Gilreath was stepping down after 13 seasons. Harris quickly jumped out of the water and raced to his wife Heather, who was on dry land.

Not trying to be like the great Dan Caesar, but of the nine UFL games played so far this season, eight have gone well under the total. And don't expect too many points in the St. Louis-DC contest on Sunday at the Dome either.
