As you sip the many local wines and weave your way through the crowd at the joyous annual Marlborough Wine & Food Festival, it’s easy to assume that wine and viticulture has long existed in the region. Not so. Until only 50 years ago, this verdant north-east slice of New Zealand’s South Island was populated by sheep; the first to plant commercial vines there was the Montana winery in 1973.

As always in food and wine matching, the best combinations are joyful and amount to more than the sum of their parts. So why shouldn't that be the same with takeaway food? There are exciting pairings to be made between wine and every sort of popular takeaway. So put down the lager, cola, or whatever old wine happened to be in your fridge and elevate takeaway dining with specially chosen bottles that really suit the dish.

The plan this week was to write about the best new season wines from Aldi and Lidl. I know many of you are keen to know about these because you hunt down my email address and ask. Aldi refreshes its range a couple of times a year and the new seasonal bottles for spring and summer have just dropped, which makes this a good time to pick out some of the stars.

Now that spring has sprung, wine lovers' thoughts might well be turning to fresh, zesty, dry whites for the lighter food (not to mention evenings) ahead. Sauvignon blanc falls into this category, but I've got a different white wine firmly in mind this season: albariño. You may well have come across albariño from its native home, Rias Baixas, in cool, coastal Galicia, north-west Spain.

No one saw the world like David Lynch. The world lost a master of cinema today. RIP. https://t.co/9CfdgADMo8
