Not so. Until only 50 years ago, this verdant north-east slice of New Zealand’s South Island was populated by sheep; the first to plant commercial vines there was the Montana winery in 1973.

Now that spring has sprung, wine lovers' thoughts might well be turning to fresh, zesty, dry whites for the lighter food (not to mention evenings) ahead. Sauvignon blanc falls into this category, but I've got a different white wine firmly in mind this season: albariño. You may well have come across albariño from its native home, Rias Baixas, in cool, coastal Galicia, north-west Spain.
