    ALFRED, Maine — York County residents can weigh in on the proposed $28.6 million York County government budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1 at a public hearing on June 4. The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. June 4 at the York County Government building, 149 Jordan Springs Road (Route 4), in Alfred. The York County Budget Committee on May 14 voted 5-4 to approve the budget and could make adjustments and take another vote after hearing from residents at the public hearing.

    ALFRED, Maine — York County Commissioners have signed off on a $21.9 million guaranteed maximum price for the construction of the York County Substance Use Recovery Center. The five-member board made a unanimous vote on Dec. 18, the last meeting of the 2024 calendar year.

    ALFRED, Maine — York County Sheriff’s deputies now use body cameras— small devices recording video and audio during incidents like domestic disputes, shots fired or suspected impaired driving. The devices, which were issued about a month ago, are a big step up from the cruiser dash cameras and audio packs instituted by the department a few years ago. York County Chief Deputy Jeremy Forbes said the body cameras are a benefit to the officers, to the department, and to the general public.

    The scent of cinnamon wafted through the air of the kitchen at York County Jail in Alfred, as vast trays of coffee cake baked in the ovens. This was just one part of the meal preparation for jail residents. What made this September weekday morning different was that News Center Maine meteorologist Aaron Myler – along with a camera crew – was on hand to help food service staff and volunteer trustee residents make the coffee cake and top it with the signature cinnamon sugar mixture.
