Lookout Santa Cruz was honored with 13 awards at the California News Publishers Association’s California Journalism Awards. The awards, recognizing work from media outlets across the state, were presented at a gala Friday in Universal City. Photojournalist Kevin Painchaud won four first-place awards for photojournalism, along with feature, news and sports photos.

Law enforcement officials are investigating what they say is the suspicious death of two people whose bodies were found in the Santa Cruz Mountains this week. Andrew Barclay, a sergeant with California Highway Patrol Golden Gate Division, which is investigating the case, told Lookout on Wednesday that officers were called to the area of Highway 35 near Oak Ridge Road, south of Castle Rock State Park, at 6:53 p.m. Monday. There, they found two bodies inside of a truck.

The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, still recovering from a catastrophic collapse in late December, will close again this week for urgent water main repairs, city officials said Wednesday. The City of Santa Cruz plans to close the wharf from 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday morning. The temporary shutdown comes three months after the Dec. 23 disaster, when a 150-foot section of the historic structure broke off during large swells, sending two workers plunging into turbulent waters below.
