When Wichita Collegiate sophomore Timmy Ritchie crossed the finish line, he knew he had just posted a good time in the 400-meter dash. But 47 seconds — flat? Now that was a surprise. Ritchie capped off a superb weekend at the Kansas high school state track and field meet by winning his first individual state title, claiming the Class 3A championship with a time of 47.00 in the 400 to shatter the state-meet record previously held by Garden Plain’s Kurt Pauly (48.32) since 2009.

High-level college basketball is returning to Wichita. It was announced Thursday morning at Mayor Lily Wu’s briefing that Wichita State has won a bid to host the championship final four of the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament in 2026 and 2027. The 32-team postseason tournament debuted in 2024 to give NCAA-funded opportunities to the best teams in the country that missed the cut for the NCAA Tournament.

No, this was March 3 at the conclusion of a 3-hour practice at an empty ball park at Trinity on the first day of the Kansas high school baseball season.
