    A Wichita man will serve six years, two months in prison for running over the foot of a police officer checking his welfare after a resident saw him passed out in a truck. Nicholas G. Shugart, 42, pleaded guilty on March 6 to aggravated battery against a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, driving under the influence and other charges tied to injuries suffered by Wichita police officer Jared Thomas on Aug. 24, 2023.

    Firefighters have contained but continued Thursday to fight a fire that started the night before at a landfill in Park City. The fire is still smoldering at Evergreen Recycle, 302 West 53rd Street North, but contained to a roughly 100 foot by 100 foot area, Sedgwick County spokesperson Stephanie Birmingham said. The rain overnight also helped with fighting the fire. Lightning is the suspected cause of the fire.

    Wichita Mayor Lily Wu said in a recent Facebook post that she’s receiving hateful emails since not signing a proclamation that recognizedTransgender Day of Visibility last month. In the post, Wu said the emails are due to the “media’s misreporting” on how she handled her insistence on not signing or reading the proclamation. One email used a racial slur for Asian people.

    The city of Wichita is spending $4.9 million on making the downtown more “walkable” — unless you’re vision-impaired, and then you’re on your own. New traffic signals being installed on corners throughout the downtown area, as part of the conversion of one-way streets to two-way streets, are not being equipped with audible signals to tell blind people when it’s safe to cross.
