Rock Island County Circuit Judge Linnea Thompson has announced that she will retire from the bench effective at the close of business June 30. Thompson, who serves the 14th Judicial District, had announced last month that she would not seek retention in 2026. She is the supervising probate judge in Rock Island County and presides over civil cases. The 14th Judicial Circuit is comprised of Rock Island, Mercer, Henry and Whiteside counties.

Christian Care in Rock Island received a $20,000 grant through the Illinois Treasurer's Charitable Trust Stabilization Program on Friday. Christian Care provides shelter, food and support services for homeless people and transitional housing for veterans. It was one of 10 nonprofit organizations in the state to receive a portion of the $200,000 in Charitable Trust Stabilization grants that were given out Friday. The maximum for each grant is $20,000.

A Rock Island man engaged in a standoff with Rock Island authorities on Friday after he allegedly battered his girlfriend and held her against her will, police said. Naytion Owens, 27, is awaiting trial in Rock Island County on drugs and weapons charges and is on probation in Scott County after pleading guilty to theft, weapons and conspiracy charges.

A woman who pleaded guilty to trying to hire a hitman to kill the father of her children was sentenced Thursday to six years in federal prison. Autumn Jeanine Carianna Markley, 30, of Davenport, was arrested Jan. 3, 2024, after a federal grand jury indicted her on the single charge of use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder for hire. She pleaded guilty to the charge on Nov. 19, 2024, during a hearing in U.S. District Court, Davenport.

The first-degree murder trial of Devon Braet has been severed from the trial with Adriana Blake and will be held at a later date. The trials were split after a witness, James Schick, testified Thursday that Braet is violent, carries a gun and shoots people. Schick was the last of five witnesses called before noon by Scott County Attorney Kelly Cunningham. Testimony in the trial started Wednesday.
