CHARLESTON, S.C - It has been 10 years since a mass shooting at a historically Black downtown Charleston church killed nine people and left the nation shocked and in mourning. The shooting happened on June 17, 2015, at Mother Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street, a church founded in 1818 by a free Black shoemaker that would stand as a beacon of faith and community for people of color. That Wednesday night, the church held its weekly Bible study in the lower level of the church building.
