Back then, there were just 50 H-E-B stores in Southwest Texas. Now there are more than 420 stores peppered across the Lone Star State and Mexico, and it’s one of the only major grocers in San Antonio. And last month, the company announced it would open three more stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In August 1921, Clemente Apolinar murdered a 14-year-old white boy with a large rock in a pasture east of San Antonio, crushing his skull and gouging out his eyes. Media and authorities initially — and incorrectly — thought that Apolinar, a Mexican-American man with a history of mental illness and violent rages, did so because he was in a cannabis-induced delirium.

In a sparsely developed corner of San Antonio’s North Side, one of the nation’s first enclosed shopping malls was born 63 years ago. North Star Mall, which a local paper dubbed a “town away from town,” put down roots in a relatively unpopulated area in the Alamo City’s outer fringes, surrounded by trees, fields and gravel. On Sept. 23, 1960, the day the mall opened, San Pedro was just two lanes, and Loop 13 — later named Loop 410 — was the Alamo City’s outer loop.
